Tales of the Abyss - 01

Summary: A prophesy was made about a red-haired boy that will be born into a royal family. In the future, he will send ‘his people’ to disaster. Afterwards, war will wage between Malkuth and Kimlasca. At the present, servants are running around, looking for their Master Luke who has disappeared again somehow. Around this time, Natalia comes over.
Guy and Natalia find Luke lazing around in a tree. Listening to him whine, the two of them remember the time when he was kidnapped as a kid. When he got back, he couldn’t remember a thing. Natalia also remembers a younger Luke holding her hand as they spoke. Natalia leaves Guy and Luke behind, and Luke suddenly gets an intense headache and hears voices. He wakes up in his room later on. A maid comes and tells him that he’s being called by his father. He finds out that his Master Van is in the manor, who agrees to train him that day.
Luke gets his sword. Van and Guy are speaking when Luke arrives, and Pierre (the gardener) greets Luke loudly to announce his presence. Guy watches while Van and Luke train. Meanwhile, people inside the manor are suddenly falling unconscious when a girl enters, singing a hymn. She appears to be there for Van, whom she proceeds to attack, but Luke intervenes. When the girl and Luke clash, they are suddenly transported to another part of the world.
The girl, whose name is Tear, wakes Luke up and agrees to bring him back to his home. While they’re trying to get out of the woods, monsters attack them, and Luke helps tear defeat them. Tear thanks him for this later on, which he finds embarrassing. They find a coachman getting water, and they bargain with him to take him to a town in exchange for Tear’s pendant. While on the coach the next morning, there are extremely loud sounds from outside. When they look out, they find a small vehicle being chased.
Cast:

Impressions: Hmm, I’ll be honest, I was expecting a lot better with the animation. The fighting scenes were good, but most of the time, the character’s faces were pretty warped. I’m also not a fan of Suzuki Chihiro. I know that Luke’s supposed to be this extremely bratty kid, but he sounds like a damn girl. His sissy tubetop and long hair don’t add much to negate that, either. But just like the game and what everyone else says, just give Luke some time and you’ll grow to love him.
So I’ll try liking him all over again.
I’m quite surprised that they added a lot of extra scenes. Heck, they even introduced Natalia already. The game is… long, so I don’t understand how they can add so much fillers. Now I’m scared that they probably won’t go through with the whole game plot, or maybe they’ll rush it towards the end. Pleaaase, just stick with the game’s pacing, please don’t mess up the amazing story.
As a plus, they sort of preserved the cool opening from the game. They used the same song (Bump of Chicken), of course, which is probably the trademark of TOA by now. They also imitated some things like the fight scenes in the opening, but I think I still prefer the game opening more. The animation was… nicer. But the closing theme of the anime was pretty nice. ![]()
