To Aru Majutsu no Index - 01

Hmmm, this caught me by surprise. The promo pics looked awful, and the synopsis didn’t seem like anything new. I wasn’t even going to watch the first episodes if I didn’t see all these people predicting about how it’s going to be ‘big’ soon. I guess curiosity got the better of me, and I’m glad about that.

Touma (or is it Toma? Everyone’s using different spellings!) is being chased by thugs because he saw a girl being bothered by them. After a while, he realizes that they’re gone, and finds out that the girl he had ’saved’ had taken care of them. Turns out, he was actually saving the thugs, not the girl. The girl is someone powerful, but when she tries her power on Touma, he can negate it somehow. But she gets angry and wipes out all the power in the city.
So, all the food in Touma’s fridge rots. He also stepped on his debit card, spilled yakisoba, and stepped on a hotdog bun. Apparently, he’s loved by misfortune. When he steps out to the veranda, a strange girl is there, demanding for food. He hands her the squashed hotdog, which she swallows with his arm. Next, what he does it take all the rotten food in his fridge and gives it to her. She actually thinks it’s good, and likes the ’sour’ taste. He feels guilty and eats all of it, gets a bad stomach, and gives her crackers. It turns out that her name is Index, and she was being chased because she has magical books inside of her. Touma doesn’t believe in magic, just scientific explanations. He reveals that his right hand has the power to negate anything, and if magic were real, he can destroy it. Index says her clothes have magical powers, and after refusing to stab her to test it out, he puts a hand on her shoulder. Nothing happens at first… and then her clothes rip into shreds.
She literally bites him all over because of it, and puts the outfit back using large safety pins. She says she has to leave because it would bring him trouble otherwise. Before taking her leave, she sees Touma trip all over again. She tells him that his hand not only negates power and magic, but also blessings from God - which is why he’s extremely unlucky. He tells her she can come back anytime (she says she’ll do that when she’s hungry) and he goes to his special classes. After classes, the girl from the night before (Misaka Mikoto) finds him again and says last night was a draw. She causes another electric attack, which makes robots chase after them.
When Touma gets back to his home, he finds Index collapsed outside his home. He realizes that she’s bleeding, and then a strange man arrives.

Impressions: Touma is an okay character. There’s nothing much to like about him, but not much else to hate either. I think what made me like him just a bit more was his connection to Index. I thought Index was the most entertaining character in this episode, to the point where she actually gave Touma a bit of color. She’s so adorable and childish, with the cutest expressions and such a goofy personality. I laughed so much when she put on the “I WIN” pose and smirk - then when she realized her clothes were ripped, she went mad and… bit Touma, what the heck. That was hilarious. I was kinda surprised when Index suddenly got a soft attitude just before she left. Her bit about ‘it negates everything, even God’s graces’ was a pretty cool line.
Touma seems pretty attached to Index right away, doesn’t he? He put on such a soft face when he saw her collapsed outside his apartment. He probably thought she took his offer… the one where she can come back when she’s hungry.
Another thing that caught my attention was this teacher. It’s one of those strange things that you want explained, but you doubt something as trivial as that would ever get an explanation. But what is she, a prodigy? Or maybe just a baby face. Still, c’mon. I kinda want an explanation for that.

According to manga, Komoe sensei is actually an adult.
She’s just have a very adorable baby-face.

Oh, really? Damn, I was kind of hoping she was some sort of cool child prodigy. Haha.
